WHO is the Dutchess County Workforce Housing Coalition?

An alliance of businesses, government and community groups working together to act as a catalyst for the development of a range of housing options for the diverse workforce of Dutchess County.

WHAT is workforce housing?
The availability of diverse housing choices for households with different needs and income levels is crucial to the economic vitality of a community. In developing workforce housing we are making sure that there are housing choices for top executives AND young professionals, teachers, nurses, firefighters, health care workers and other essential community workers.

HOW can this be achieved?
Local action at the community level is key to the success of any workforce housing effort. There are a variety of techniques that can be used by your local government to support and even initiate mixed income and mixed-use development that incorporates quality design, placement and land use that is sensitive to the area. Employers can also play a vital role in creating housing opportunities for their workers through Employer Assisted Housing programs.

WHERE are there examples of housing models for workers?
Right now, there are a number of examples in the County of affordable housing development that have been developed by nonprofit housing organizations, including both rental and ownership units. But, even more exciting, are recent zoning and land use law changes several Dutchess County Towns, Villages and Cities have taken to encourage development of a wide range of housing types, using "smart growth" techniques.
